We all know the best part of science is hands-on and that the most enjoyable hands-on bits involve blowing things up. So the best science games have got to be making things blow up in your own kitchen. Make sure you tell your parents that you’ll be learning about chemical reactions, which will help to persuade your parents to let you make a huge bubbling mess doing this project. The good news is that you can use supplies that are probably already in the kitchen like vinegar and food coloring—you know, that stuff you use to dye Easter eggs—well, you’re about to make it explode.
This is a good opportunity to let your Dad get out his video camera or to film it on your phone—you’ll definitely want your parents to post this experiment on FreakyRivet’s Facebook page for your friends to see. Then you’ll have to put up with them begging you to show them how to do it, and their parents begging you not to!
Volcanoes are scary as you like and go through dormant periods (when they’re not blowing up) and active periods (when they are getting ready to blow up). Volcanologists are scientists who study the way volcanoes work and one of the hardest things they do is trying to figure out whether a volcano is dormant or active. You can start your career as a budding volcanologist by setting off a chain of eruptions right in your home.
You’ll need to set up several stations throughout the kitchen so you can set the volcanoes off at different moments and get to watch and film each one. Make sure this is okay with your parents. Don’t try to get away with doing this while your older brother is supposed to be watching you.
