A fab, fun way to get your bum off the sofa and discover the great outdoors – finding your way using a map and compass!
Orienteering is a fun but challenging adventure activity that requires you to find (or navigate) your way from one place to another via a series of checkpoints, using a map and compass. It was first used by the military (the army, marines etc) and is popular with Scouts and Guides. It’s also a sport which is competed nationally and internationally. Put simply, it’s like a treasure hunt without the treasure – or the clues! It’s a great way to get moving and to spend some time outdoors with your friends or even your family (although you may end up squabbling with brothers or sisters over the best route to take!). Rivet Tip: Some forests, woods and parks have permanent orienteering courses set up which you could use instead of setting up your own course. Here, we look at setting up your own orienteering course in your back garden, playground or park.
