You’re probably used to a meltdown being something your kid brother (or your mum) has when they get super-stressed but this meltdown is even more fun than watching that! You can turn unwanted old crayons into a bright and one-of-a-kind candle. All you’ll need is a few supplies and the aid of an adult, which is the tricky part.
You want to experiment with melting down old crayons and use the kitchen for non-food purposes—this makes your parents nervous because they envision either a huge mess or having to call emergency services because you’ve set yourself/the house/the cat on fire. Obviously that isn’t going to happen but it’ll take some fast talking to convince your parents.
So here’s the plan:
You’ll need a good excuse for this one. Look at the calendar and see if Mother’s Day or granny’s birthday are coming up soon. Go tell your mum or dad that you want to make a special gift for granny or great aunt Mary or whomever you can think of, but that you need their help. Once you’ve persuaded them that your desire to do the project comes from [A] your DEEP LOVE of an elderly relative (and definitely not from a wish to melt stuff on the cooker), mention that this will [B] also recycle some of those old stubby crayons. You know, the ones that are always underfoot or in the kitchen drawer, too small to use but too good to throw away. If necessary, whine that you never get to spend quality time together any more and mention that it’s a fun family activity that doesn’t involve the TV or computer. That ought to guilt them!
Also, ask your mum or dad which scent they like best—cinnamon, vanilla, peppermint? Grown-ups love to be asked for advice and it’ll make them feel included in your project. So let them pick out the fragrance for the candle.
Once you’ve enlisted your adult help, you can get started planning your homemade crayon candle.
