The sun is very far away from us, yet obviously, the heat it generates can still be felt here on Earth. Of course, this isn’t the only thing the sun generates that can be felt here. Solar storms may not be something that our bodies can feel, but we can see their effect via the technologies we use. For one, when solar storms affect the Earth’s magnetic field, satellites may get shut down and mess up the accuracy of our GPS devices and cause temporary outages in long distance cellphone use. If you’ve never experienced this but want to (for the sake of science), then give this activity a shot – you’ll be making a “solar storm” on a very small scale.
