Aside from Hiragana and Katakana, the Japanese use adopted Chinese characters for writing. These characters are called “Kanji,” and unlike Hiragana and Katakana, each Kanji represents a word, not just a sound. Reading and writing Kanji can be really hard to learn for those who didn’t grow up in Japan, but this doesn’t mean it’s impossible.
